juan-luis-guerra.jpgDaddy Yankee, Orishas and Ivy Queen lost to Puerto Rican Calle 13 for the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album for  “Residente o Visitante.”

Juan Luis Guerra and his banda 440 won, not one, not two, but a total of five awards at the 8th Annual  edition of the Latin Grammys. The Dominican star’s laurels included trophies for Record, Song, and Album of the Year, Best Merengue Song, Best Tropical Song, Person of the Year. Other winners for the night included Ricky Martin (Pop Vocal Album and Long Form Video), Jesse and Joy (Best New Artist), Juan Luis Ricky Martin told the press: “Guerra is … the father of Latin American poetry and whoever thinks the contrary, well, get off the bus”. He can talk. He won two trophies. Wonder if he would still have kind words to say, if like Alejandro Sanz, he had  to go home empty-handed.

  1. it is great juan Luis got 5 grammys. So happy for him. The best new artist
result is in the dark zone. Jesse & Joe were already established artists in 2005 in Mexico, therefore they should have not been selected as new artists.

  2. Carmen:

I think that the fact that Jesse and Joe’s reach has extended beyond Mexico now makes the Latin Grammys feel justified and considering them as “New Artists”. The mainstream version of the Grammys tend to be somewhat odd in their pics too. For example, there are instances in Grammy history when an artist was formerly part of a group, and when they went solo—the Grammy committee would bestow a Best New Artist Grammy unto that said individual. Carmen, there are so many cases…read Thomas O’Neill’s book The Grammys: For the Record.

    Thanks for reading Hissip.

  3. I read with interest above comments. It is true jesse & Joy are not new artists as they were singing in mexico back in 2005.According to warner Music website, they sing for thousands of people in Zocalo. Interestingly, I heard that it was already known that Jesse & Joy
were the winners weeks before the award date in Vegas. Not only that, that the representative of Jesse & Joy, Alejandro Abaroa is the brother of latin grammy president Gabriel Abaroa. Too many issues for the category of best new artist. It smells rotten.
